Dan Cammish headed team-mate Ash Sutton for a NAPA Racing UK 1-2 in the second British Touring Car Championship race at Donington Park, as Team VERTU’s Tom Ingram battled to complete the podium.

CPRL’s Adam Morgan started the race from pole position thanks to his race one win, but with the top three starting on the slower hard-compound tyre, all eyes were on Cammish starting from fourth and the second CPRL Mercedes of Daniel Rowbottom starting fifth on the faster rubber.

At the start, front-row starter Sutton capitalised on the fact that the TOCA Turbo Boost could not be used on the first lap to seize the lead heading through the Craner Curves, as Laser Tools Racing’s Gordon Shedden, who started third on the hard tyre, quickly fell down the order to sixth.

Rowbottom was an early mover, passing Cammish for third into Coppice on the second lap before taking team-mate Morgan for second into the Melbourne Hairpin further around the lap.

Sutton held the lead for the opening three laps, but going down the back straight on lap four Rowbottom boosted past his former team-mate to take over at the front, with Cammish following into second at the last corner of the lap.

Rowbottom’s lead only lasted two laps, as Cammish took over with a pass at Goddards, the final corner, on lap six, with slight contact between the pair unsettling the Mercedes and immediately putting him under pressure from Sutton.

Ingram, meanwhile, was by now up to fourth, and applying significant pressure to the back of Sutton’s Ford.

However, despite holding a tyre advantage over his rival, Ingram struggled to open the door on Sutton. On lap ten Sutton then breezed past Rowbottom exiting the Fogarty Esses after the Mercedes slowed mid-corner before speeding up.

That put Sutton further out of reach of Ingram, who now had to try and overtake the CPRL Mercedes on-track. It took Ingram until the penultimate lap to get ahead of Rowbottom into the Fogarty Esses, but by now Sutton was almost two seconds up the road and out of reach.

Cammish thus took his second win of the season, whilst Sutton further extended his championship advantage to 96 points over team-mate Cammish, who is now a point ahead of Ingram.

Rowbottom finished in fourth behind Ingram, with Team VERTU’s Ricky Collard in fifth.

Power Maxed Racing’s Dexter Patterson was the top Independent driver in sixth, thanks to moving ahead of Laser Tools Racing’s Árón Taylor-Smith at mid-distance, with the latter the top Toyota driver in seventh.

Aiden Moffat brought his Power Maxed Audi home in eighth, whilst the top ten was seen out by CPRL’s Adam Morgan and Restart Racing’s Chris Smiley.

After the race, the top ten were randomly drawn to be reversed for the final race at 17:30 BST, handing Smiley pole position with Morgan alongside and both drivers being back on the medium tyre.

However, there was strife for the second Restart Racing Hyundai of Daniel Lloyd on the final lap when his car caught fire and he had to stop by the side of the track.

WSR’s Lewis Gilbert failed to take the start, the team deeming the damage caused to his BMW in his race one roll too significant to be repaired trackside.
