Plato Racing’s Adam Morgan scored a lights-to-flag victory in the British Touring Car Championship qualifying race at Knockhill, beating Laser Tools Racing’s Gordon Shedden.

Morgan started from pole thanks to posting the fastest time in qualifying which had immediately preceded the race, and the Lancastrian duly led every single lap in the 20-lap sprint.

Five of those ended up being behind the safety car, after Toyota’s Josh Cook was turned into the barriers at high-speed by Speedworks Motorsport stable-mate Árón Taylor-Smith just four corners into the race at the exit of Butcher’s corner.

Cook emerged unscathed from his Corolla, but heavy front-left damage from hitting the tyres almost head-on will give his team plenty of repair work overnight.

Racing resumed on lap seven, with light rain intensifying over the Scottish circuit over the next half dozen laps. Thew precipitation ultimately didn’t amount to much in the end, and Morgan pulled out an increasingly large gap over Shedden in the final laps, eventually winning by just under three seconds.

Rowbottom put Shedden under heavy pressure on the final lap, but the positions remained unchanged. It was the second time the Scot had to withstand pressure from the Mercedes driver, after Rowbottom made a better start away from the line and tried to pass around the outside into the first corner, before contact allowed Shedden to hold the place.

Rowbottom thus completed the podium, whilst Restart Racing’s Chris Smiley took fourth after regaining the place from WSR’s Charles Rainford just after the restart.

Rainford brought his BMW home in fifth, ahead of team-mate Daryl De Leon in sixth.

Power Maxed Racing’s Mikey Doble took seventh, pipping Team VERTU’s Ricky Collard on the final lap of the race, leaving the Hyundai driver to settle for eighth.

A challenging race for the title contenders saw Tom Ingram finish in ninth behind his team-mate, gaining just two places, including one past Aiden Moffat on the opening lap of the race.

Moffat lost out because he had been seemingly tapped by Collard through Duffus Dip on the opening lap, sending his Audi spearing across the grass.

The Power Maxed Racing driver pitted at the end of the first lap, under safety car conditions, for a change to wet weather rubber, but after falling a lap down his race was effectively over.

The top ten was completed by NAPA Racing UK’s Dan Cammish, who was just ahead of team-mate and points leader Ash Sutton in 11th.

Both drivers got involved in an entertaining close-quarters battle with Restart Racing’s James Dorlin on lap 14, which saw Dorlin ultimately lose out to Tom Chilton and Dexter Patterson as well, dropping the independent Hyundai racer to a 15th-place finish.
